Youth Empowering Seniors (YES) is a flagship program of The Thompson Foundation, dedicated to bridging generations through service and connection. This dynamic volunteer initiative links high school and college students with meaningful service-learning projects, community-based learning programs, and fieldwork study opportunities—all while earning academic credit, scholarships, and awards.
Interested in becoming a grandfriend, walking for a cause, playing an instrument, or leading a painting class? We have that too!
Our intergenerational approach to wellness brings together young hearts and wise spirits, fostering a synergy of meaningful connections. For students, YES serves as a launching pad for passionate advocacy and leadership—a valuable introduction to civic engagement in the healthcare industry. Our community is your community, where you can truly be yourself, experience personal and professional growth, and even enhance your own mental well-being.
For residents, YES provides a refreshing boost to quality of life, reducing isolation, depression, and anxiety. Through intentional and engaging activities, residents enjoy improved moods, increased energy levels, enhanced physical activity, and stimulating experiences that keep the mind sharp and engaged.
With YES, every day is an opportunity for mutual growth, connection, and a shared journey toward wellness.

Volunteering has the superpower to reduce anxiety and depression, build emotional intelligence and empathy, and create a sense of belonging. Working with older adults helps students develop deeper emotional awareness, patience, and communication skills, all linked to better mental well-being. Learning about aging, dementia and wellness enhances coping skills and prepares students for real-life caregiving challenges that they may face with family members, leading to greater emotional resilience.
